The Society for Nosocomial Infections Prevention (SPNN) has been established in 2005 in order to unite experts from various fields of medicine and to get together infection control specialists with clinical physicians and nurses. It unites medical staff from both Czech and Slovak Republics in solving the most important problems on the field of nosocomial infections prevention. Its main goal is to improve the quality of health-care and to reduce morbidity and mortality of hospitalised patients due to acquired nosocomial infections (NI). Currently, the SPNN consists of 6 sections: The Section of Disinfection, Sterilization, Surveillance of NI, Preventive Nursing Procedures, Preventive Medical Procedures and Quality of Health-care. The SPNN publishes quarterly peer-reviewed medical journal Nosocomial Infection, the only journal focused on NI prevention in Czech and Slovak Republics. The International Congress on Nosocomial Infections Prevention taking place in May each year is organised by SPNN to enable meetings of influential experts and opinion leaders on a regular basis in order to discuss topical issues, new approaches, best practice procedures, recommendations, guidelines, legislation, modern technologies and to share experiences. Its wider range encompasses also professional infections control, communal hygiene and the safety of patients. The main attention is regularly focused at the most critical points of the health-care e.g. intensive care units, central operating theatres, single-day surgery, central sterilisation services, microbial resistance etc.
The Society for Nosocomial Infections Prevention is a member of the World Forum for Hospital Sterile Supply and the International Federation of Infection Control.
Up to this time the SPNN has been chaired by Dr. Renata Podstatová and Associate Professor Dr. Rastislav Maďar, MD, PhD.
